On Tools

I often times get asked what sorts of tools I use for my work. I use the same tools as everyone else. I hate questions about art supplies and tools. The best tool is the one right in front of you, within arm’s reach.

In college, I loved James Jean’s work. I saw that he was working with acrylic on Rives BFK paper. I had acrylic, so I went out to get Rives BFK paper. I dropped some serious dough (I was a student then, remember) on a few sheets of Rives BFK, got home, inspected it all, and realized it was just freakin’ paper.

Don’t romanticize your tools. Or worse yet, someone else’s. The tools don’t make the artist/illustrator/designer/writer/fashion designer/surgeon/plumber. Paul Rand could kick everyone’s ass with a pair of scissors.
