Anonymous asked: You've got one of the most distinct styles I've seen. What advice do you have for a budding designer to help develop their style? How do you stay true to your style and still satisfy the clients needs?
I think you’re going about this backwards. Trying to start with style and then figuring out message doesn’t work. It’s the old cart before horse problem.
Figure out what you want to SAY. That is what’s important. The lipstick doesn’t keep the pig alive. The guts do. Message dictates the proper aesthetic. Designers apply this thinking to their clients (and argue and kick and spit when the client doesn’t understand). It’s amusing how infrequently we apply it to ourselves. Why the disconnect? It’s the same problem: someone wants to worry about the clothes before the man wearing them.
So, ask yourself, what’s your message? Think small if big is intimidating. It doesn’t have to be a unified theory of everything, just decide on something you can believe in. I believe in concepts and approaching things with a vitality and levity. That led to how my work looks now. I’ve worn these values on my sleeve, and it’s attracted clients that value those same things.
